Murchison House Station Tagalong Tour
|
Join us on Kalbarri's only guided self-drive 4WD adventure tour. Your unforgettable day out begins
when you rendezvous with the other adventures at the Kalbarri Visitors Centre carpark at 7.45AM. There one of
the station staff will meet you and escort you to the Murchison House homestead for a brief introductory talk.
Your guide will offer you a few helpful hints on four wheel drive tactics, ensure that your tyre pressures are
right and hand out "mud maps" and a hand-held UHF radio if required. Once your vehicle is in 4WD it's time to head
off, over the causeway and into the outback.
Our tour first takes you to Yatthoo Field, originally cleared by ticket-of-leave men in the 1860's and
past the new shearing shed erected in 1981. Then it is time for the first challenge, the steep track up and over
the Toolonga escarpment that we call the "jump-up". At the top is our first stop, a brief pause to take in the
spectacular views south to Kalbarri.
We continue over the range to the permanent soaks and springs of Bindarri, where wildlife is abundant,
and on out to the next viewpoint at Wild Horse Tank. Water is pumped more than 11kms from Bindarri
to this holding and then gravity fed over 14kms to two other tanks.
We then follow the "trough line" out to our morning tea stop at Yandilla Gully.
Your guide will answer some of the questions you have whilst he boils the billy and you can help yourself to a cuppa
and a biscuit or slice of cake. Stretch your legs under the river gums or just sit and savour the peace and quiet of our "offce".
Once you are all packed up its time to resume the drive, into spectacular Hidden Valley and down through
The Gap and Cecil's Camp. From there you will traverse the Bookah Flats to Bettie Crossing
and then onto Wilgamia Pool for lunch. The serene billabong abounds with birdlife and on a hot day
is the perfect place to cool down with a swim.
With lunch over, it is finally time to turn towards home, following the winding Murchison River
through rugged sandstone gorges and over fertile floodplains. In season you will find an incomparable
display of wildflowers along the river road, and the sandstone ridges offer outstanding rock formations.
Look through Nature's Back Window at Thunderbolt Rock or crawl down The Unnel
for a photo opportunity.
Enjoy the views along the river valley from Stonewall or Nats then charge the deep sand of the
Horse Crossing for the final run back to the homestead.
Time now for a brief chat or perhaps a comfort stop while you return your tyres to road pressure
before departing for home.
